Silvester
celebration!
German
New Year's Eve
December 31st, 2009
The
Harmony Silvester celebration is a family focused afternoon of fun
in historic Harmony that honors its German heritage by celebrating
Silvester (New Year's Eve) on German time.
Schedule of events:
Its
Silvester party includes a 5-kilometer run and ends with celebrants
welcoming 2010 as a lighted ball descends in the diamond, signaling
midnight in Germany and the beginning of a fireworks display. German
music is performed, and Harmony's specialty shops and art gallery
offer year-end sales.
From 2 to 5 p.m.,
visitors to the Harmony Museum at 218 Mercer Street can learn about
more than 250 years of area history, see the short film "Dinner for
One" (Miss Sophie's annual dinner party for imaginary guests) in a
wine cellar that was 200 years old this year, and try Bleigiessen (blye-ghee-senn)
(traditional German lead-drop fortune telling) -- examining the
shape of a bit of melted lead for clues about what the new year may
bring. A pork and sauerkraut buffet dinner is served in the museum's
Stewart Hall.
6:00 Ball drop and
Armstrong's Fireworks Blast!
